In this passage, Jesus Christ remains in Galilee because the Jewish leaders in Judea are seeking to kill Him. As the Feast of Tabernacles approaches, His brothers urge Him to go publicly to Jerusalem and show His works. However, they do not truly believe in Him. Jesus responds that His time has not yet come, and He goes to the feast privately rather than publicly.

At the festival, there is much discussion about Jesus among the people—some say He is good, while others accuse Him of deception. Midway through the feast, Jesus begins teaching in the temple. The people are amazed at His knowledge since He has not had formal religious training.

Jesus explains that His teaching comes from God, not from Himself. He says that anyone who truly desires to do God’s will can recognize that His teaching is from God. He also confronts the religious leaders, exposing their hypocrisy: although they accuse Him of breaking the law (by healing on the Sabbath), they themselves allow circumcision on the Sabbath.

Jesus challenges them not to judge by outward appearances but to judge with righteous judgment.
