John 6:15-24 SDA Bible Commentary

-Opening Prayer
READ John 6:15–24
Covers two significant events: Jesus’ refusal to be crowned an earthly king and His subsequent walking on the water.
The Crisis of Popularity (John 6:15)
- Rejecting Earthly Kingship: After the feeding of the 5,000, the crowd was convinced Jesus was “that Prophet” (Moses’ successor). They planned to take Him by force to make Him king, hoping for a leader who would provide daily food and liberation from Roman rule.
- The Motive of the Crowd: SDA commentary highlights that the people’s desire was based on materialistic and political goalsrather than spiritual need. They wanted a “bread king” who would satisfy their physical hunger without requiring spiritual transformation.
- Jesus’ Withdrawal: Knowing their hearts, Jesus “withdrew again to a mountain by himself alone”. He did this to avoid a political confrontation and to spend time in prayer, refueling His own spirit and seeking the Father’s will.
- The Night on the Sea (John 6:16–21)
- The Disciples’ Struggle: While Jesus prayed, the disciples set out across the Sea of Galilee toward Capernaum. They encountered a fierce storm that left them feeling helpless and afraid.
- Walking on Water: Jesus came to them in the fourth watch of the night, walking on the waves. SDA perspectives emphasize that this miracle demonstrated His authority over natureand His role as the divine
- Spiritual Lesson: The storm represents the “storms of life” or trials that believers face. Just as the disciples were safe once they received Jesus into the boat, believers find peace by trusting His presence amidst difficulties
- The Search for Jesus (John 6:22–24)
- Wrong Motives: The next day, the crowd realized Jesus was gone and followed Him to Capernaum. SDA commentary notes that their persistent search was still driven by the desire for more miraculous food rather than a desire for the “Bread of Life”.
