Study of John 3:22-36

In John 3:22-36, we find John the Baptist giving his “testimony” about his cousin Jesus who he believes and proclaims to be the long-awaited Messiah. The setting for John’s words is what some might have perceived as a rivalry between “team Jesus” and “team John”. Both have followers, both are baptizing and preaching a message of repentance. But John clearly declares once again that he is not the Messiah but the one who has been sent to prepare the way for the Messiah. John uses the analogy of a wedding: Jesus is the Bridegroom, those who believe in Him are the Bride (the Church), and the friend of the Groom – the “best man” – John himself.  John further explains that this Messiah “Bridegroom” is from above. He has come from God and is above and over everything, and God gives the Holy Spirit “without limit.” The implication seems to be that the ministry of Jesus is empowered by the limitless work of the Holy Spirit. Finally, John echoes the words from earlier in chapter three that “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.”
