“Summary of John 10:22–42”

During the Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah) in Jerusalem, Jesus was walking in Solomon’s Colonnade when the Jewish leaders surrounded Him and demanded, “If You are the Christ, tell us plainly” (vv. 22–24).

Jesus replied that He had already told them through His words and works, but they did not believe because they were not His sheep. He explained that His sheep hear His voice, follow Him, and receive eternal life. He promised that no one can snatch His followers out of His hand because they are also held securely by the Father. Jesus then made the powerful declaration: “I and My Father are one” (vv. 25–30).

The Jewish leaders picked up stones to stone Him, recognizing that He was claiming equality with God. Jesus challenged them, asking why they sought to stone Him when He had performed many good works from the Father. They answered that it was not for His works but for blasphemy, because He, being a man, claimed to be God (vv. 31–33).

Jesus responded by referring to Scripture, showing that His claim was consistent with God’s revelation. He urged them to consider His works as evidence that the Father was in Him and He in the Father. Despite His explanation, they again tried to arrest Him, but He escaped from their hands (vv. 34–39).

Jesus then crossed the Jordan to the place where John the Baptist had first been baptizing. Many people came to Him there. They remembered that although John performed no miracles, everything John had said about Jesus was true. As a result, many believed in Jesus (vv. 40–42).
