“Summary of John 10:1–21”

In this passage, Jesus uses the illustration of a shepherd and his sheep to teach about His relationship with His followers.

Verses 1–6: The Shepherd and the Sheep
Jesus explains that a true shepherd enters the sheepfold through the gate, while thieves and robbers try to enter another way. The sheep recognize the shepherd’s voice and follow him because they know and trust him. Strangers cannot lead them because they do not recognize their voice.

Verses 7–10: Jesus, the Door
Jesus declares, “I am the door of the sheep.” Through Him, people find salvation, safety, and spiritual nourishment. In contrast, thieves come only to steal, kill, and destroy. Jesus came so that His followers may have life, and have it abundantly.

Verses 11–18: Jesus, the Good Shepherd
Jesus identifies Himself as the Good Shepherd who willingly lays down His life for the sheep. Unlike a hired worker who abandons the flock when danger comes, Jesus deeply loves and protects His sheep. He knows them personally, and they know Him, just as He knows the Father and the Father knows Him. Jesus also speaks of “other sheep” not yet in the fold, pointing to the inclusion of Gentiles and all who would believe in Him. He emphasizes that He voluntarily lays down His life and will take it up again, referring to His death and resurrection.

Verses 19–21: Division Among the People
Jesus’ words cause division among the Jews. Some accuse Him of being demon-possessed and insane, while others recognize that His teachings and miracles, including giving sight to the blind, could not be the work of a demon.
