“Study of John 4:1-26”

John 4:1–26 tells the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well.

Jesus, traveling through Samaria, stops at Jacob’s well and asks a Samaritan woman for water. This is unusual because Jews and Samaritans avoided each other, and men typically did not speak publicly with women. Jesus uses the conversation to shift from physical water to “living water,” explaining that whoever drinks what He gives will never thirst again, because it leads to eternal life.

Jesus gently reveals His knowledge of the woman’s personal life, showing both divine insight and compassion rather than condemnation. The woman recognizes Him as a prophet and raises a question about the proper place of worship. Jesus teaches that true worship is not tied to a location but is done “in spirit and in truth.”

The woman speaks of the coming Messiah, and Jesus clearly reveals His identity to her, saying “I who speak to you am He.” This passage highlights Jesus’ mission to break social barriers, offer salvation to all, and reveal Himself as the Messiah.
